Navicular (Ankle) Avascular Necrosis (AVN) in A Soccer Player treated With Stem Cells

soccer

Tampa, Saint Petersburg and Clearwater, Fl

A teenage soccer player sustained a  traumatic injury to her ankle. This resulted in loss of playing time and eventual discontinuation of soccer. She was not initially diagnosed avascular necrosis (AVN) that was considered early in her treatment, yet when he diagnosis of AVN was made, the surgical considerations were all negative on her return to play, and even consideration of ankle joint fusion was made. Ankle fusion of a young athlete is contrary to the vision of Dennis M. Lox, MD,. This was unacceptable for an elite athlete In her prime years, yet with this athlete even though she was young the discussion of fusion was premature, Her parents knew better and sought out Dennis M. Lox, MD,, a Sports Medicine and Regenerative specialist, as an alternative treatment strategy that could give her regenerative treatment with stem cells. They intuitively knew, which a lot of patients don’t, is that a teenage soccer player with a fused ankle will develop arthritis down the road. They did not wish this for their daughter. Additionally, her sports career in soccer would be over.

Clinically, she has done well. No pain, swelling or tenderness at all after the stem cell procedure. Followup MRI’s have demonstrated resolution of her AVN. Dr. Lox has presented her case in lectures in international scientific meetings on stem cell research, to illustrate the complexities and the success achievable with athletes with avascular necrosis (AVN).
