Synovial Cyst
Clearwater, Tampa, St Petersburg, Florida, Beverly Hills, Los Angeles
Synovial cysts may occur in the wrists and are usually a manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis. However, a synovial cyst is also seen in the pisotriquetral joint and is not related to any inflammatory or rheumatoid arthritic process. If the pisotriquetral synovial cyst enlarges, it may be a source of chronic wrist pain, and is usually associated with degeneration of the pisotriquetral joint. As opposed to a ganglion cyst, the synovial cyst is more anatomically similar to a cyst that develops behind the meniscus in the knee.
Conservative measures may be effective in aspirating the fluid, or injecting it with an anesthetic and corticosteroid compound. Failed attempts at managing this may require surgical removal of the pisiform bone, which would affect normal function of the wrist.
An alternative treatment to this, which is much easier and allows maintenance of the normal wrist function and anatomy, would be to treat the synovial cyst with platelet rich plasma (PRP). Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy captures the healing growth factors that are in a person’s own blood. By injecting the PRP into the damaged area of the wrist, it may help heal the affected area and diminish pain. In addition, there are indications for platelet-rich plasma in healing a variety of conditions, in much the same way that stem cell therapy may be used to help regenerate different types of tissues.
This technology seems a much more reasonable option than removing a bone that is normally present in the wrist, which allows for adequate wrist function.
